Peterhof
Palace Exteriors - Palace Interiors - Fountains and Gardens

This is Peter the Great's palace. Located about 30 minutes southwest of St. Petersburg, it is modeled after grand European palaces such as France's Versailles.

The palace was destroyed in World War 2. Some sources say that the Russians knew the palace would be taken by the Germans, and they did not want to let the Germans take over this historic site. So they saved the art and statues they could and destroyed the rest. Our guide said that the palace was destroyed by the Germans. I guess there is some discrepancy in history based on your source.

Nonetheless, the restored palace is beautiful, and interior rooms show off the opulent style of the original palace.

The fountains are enchanting. The grand cascade is a wonderful collection of fountains that together create a majestic vista.
